The risk of contracting yellow fever in each country differs, so the vaccine requirement differs.
- The CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends getting a shot if the risk of yellow fever is very low.
- Vaccination is required if the risk of contracting yellow fever is significant (in a pandemic area or area with current outbreaks).

Proof of yellow fever vaccination is different from the CDC vaccine recommendation. Under the International Health Regulation, countries can establish Yellow fever vaccine entry requirements.
Certain countries require proof of vaccination from all countries unless a yellow fever vaccine provider issues a medical waiver.

Countries require proof of vaccination (aka "Yellow fever card") if travelers arrive from a region with yellow fever. ›
The World Health Organization defines yellow fever areas as areas where Yellow fever activity has been reported currently or in the past and where vectors (a specific mosquito type) or reservoirs (monkeys) exist.
So, certain countries ask for proof of yellow fever vaccination if the yellow areas are visited within 30 days of entry.
Travelers expect to comply with the requirement unless the yellow fever vaccine provider issues the waiver.
